Quoting from a VISA spokeswoman, "VISA has so far never come across the case of a credit card number having being stolen over the internet while a customer was using it to purchase an item". In other words, consumers are actually safer shopping electronically than in the physical world, whether over the phone or in a shop where anyone is able to write down the card number and then use it fraudulently.
In 1994, it took a university professor with 120 computers and 2 supercomputers working in parallel, 8 days to break a single 40-bit encrypted message. These days, with 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL), it would take a Pentium computer somewhere around the age of the earth (billions of years in other words) running 24 hours a day to crack a 128-bit encrypted message.
So how do you know you're safe? If you're browsing with Internet Explorer, you'll see a padlock symbol on the navigation toolbar. When you enter the payment page (where you'll enter your credit card information), the padlock will be locked. This means you are in a secure mode. If you're using Netscape Navigator/Communicator, there'll be a similar padlock on the toolbar
